This seemed a fitting quote as we approach the end of the Year of the Priest:

Who then is the priest? He is the defender of truth, who stands with angels, gives glory with archangels, causes sacrifices to rise to the altar on high, shares Christ’s priesthood, refashions creation, restores it in God’s image, recreates it for the world on high and, even greater, is divinized and divinizes.

St. Gregory of Nazianzus, quoted in Catechsim of the Catholic Church 1589

The Most Important Person on Earth

Posted by james0235 on May 9, 2010

“The Most Important Person on earth is a mother.  She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not.  She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral – a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby’s body…The angels have not been blessed with such a grace.  They cannot share in God’s creative miracle to bring new saints to Heaven.  Only a human mother can.  Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature; God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation…What on God’s good earth is more glorious than this: to be a mother?”

The next great heresy is going to be simply an attack on morality; and especially on sexual morality. And it is coming, not from a few Socialists surviving from the Fabian Society, but from the living exultant energy of the rich resolved to enjoy themselves at last, with neither Popery nor Puritanism nor Socialism to hold them back… The roots of the new heresy, God knows, are as deep as nature itself, whose flower is the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eye and the pride of life. I say that the man who cannot see this cannot see the signs of the times; cannot see even the skysigns in the street that are the new sort of signs in heaven. The madness of tomorrow is not in Moscow but much more in Manhattan – but most of what was in Broadway is already in Piccadilly.

Blessed Is The Wood

Posted by james0235 on April 10, 2009

I first came across this one a few years ago. And it never seems to be far from my mind in Holy Week:

For blessed is the wood by which righteousness comes.
Wisdom 14:7 RSVCE

“Oh, Lord, please let me say the right words this afternoon, as I consecrate another gay union that angers you so.”

“Your prayers should be liturgical. How I would like to see you using the psalms and prayers from the missal, rather than private prayers of your own choice.”

I read this quote this morning in both the 1962 Roman Catholic Daily Missal and Volume 10 of The Liturgical Year:

“As soon as we have celebrated the Advent of the Holy Ghost, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Trinity in the office of the following Sunday.

The time is well chosen, for, immediately after the descent of this Divine Spirit, began the preaching, and belief and Baptism and confession in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.”
